As dentists we spend a lot of time treating pain from the teeth. Non-dental pain or Oro-Facial pain is that pain which starts in other parts of the head and neck and we have the techniques to treat or reduce some of these conditions.
Temperomandibular disorder is pain from and around the jaw joints. This can be felt as:
- Face pain
- Neck pain
After assessment, if appropriate, we can treat with:
- Provision of a splint
- Referral to a physiotherapist.
Some unfortunate patients can spend months or years going from specialist to specialist and never seeing a suitably trained dental practitioner for assessment. We cannot offer a cure but we may be able to help reduce the symptoms.
As dentists we may be in the best position to recognise and diagnose those conditions which medical practitioners have little experience of, such as:
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Burning mouth syndrome
- Atypical facial pain, and make the appropriate referral.
Treatments are carried out by Mr William Dryden.
